"The train ride along the rolling banks of the Mississippi River from Grandview, Iowa to Muscatine, Iowa was just under two hours, but it was taking me worlds away. I was born and raised in Grandview and other than a journey to the capital city of Des Moines for the State Fair three years before, I had never been this far away from home. I wasn't frightened to be leaving Grandview. I was excited for what I dreamed the future could hold.
For as long as I could remember, I had wanted to become a teacher like my sister, Anne. I had seen what her teaching certificate had done for her, and I desperately wanted the same. It had been her ticket to new towns, new friends and new adventures. Life in Grandview wasn't terrible for me. I was surrounded by a wonderful group of family and friends, and life was, well secure if nothing else. I just wanted more. I needed more. I wanted the same opportunities Anne had earned.
I wanted to see the country, the world."
